NFL Rumors: Miami Dolphins Host Free-Agent Wes Welker
The Miami Dolphins will host free-agent veteran wide receiver Wes Welker on Wednesday, a team source reported.
Welker, who is turning 34 within a month, started his professional career with the Dolphins in 2004. During that year, Welker originally signed with the San Diego Chargers after failing to get drafted. Although Welker made it out of training camp, he was cut after the first game of the season. Chargers head coach Marty Schottenheimer later stated that in regards to roster cuts, letting Welker go was the his "biggest mistake."
After two seasons, the Dolphins made one of their biggest mistakes by trading Welker to the New England Patriots in exchange for a second- and a seventh-round pick in 2007.
With the Patriots, Welker recorded at least 100 receptions and amassed more than 1,000 yards in five of his six seasons with the Patriots.
In 2013, Welker signed a two-year contract with the Denver Broncos. During his first year with the Broncos, he recorded a single-season career high of 10 touchdowns. Despite Welker's impressive resume, his performance has slowed down due to his age and a string of concussions. Last season, he made only 49 receptions for 464 yards and two touchdowns, his lowest numbers since his 2005 season with the Dolphins.
If Miami chooses to bring Welker in, he could take on a mentoring role for the team's young group of receivers. Welker is a five-time Pro Bowl.
During the offseason, the Dolphins have also invited free-agent receivers Greg Jennings and Michael Crabtree.
