Giuliana Rancic Received Multiple Death Threats Following 'Fashion Police' Controversy
"Fashion Police" TV host Giuliana Rancic came under fire for making racist comments about Zendaya's hair at the Oscars, which she quickly responded by issuing a heartfelt apology. Zendaya graciously accepted the apology on social media and it appeared that everyone had moved on, except for fans. Giuliana is now opening up and said she received multiple death threats following the incident.
"I started very quickly getting death threats," Rancic said in a new interview with People Magazine. "People were sending me pictures of the barrel of a gun saying, 'I'm going to kill your family.' It was awful."
She also says that what she said on the show was scripted and someone else had written it. Giuliana also said the comments made were taken out of context.
"There were about 50 sets of eyeballs on set that day," she says. "And not one person thought that it had the undertones that it ended up having once it aired because they heard it in context."
Yet by the time Zendaya's statement went viral, the damage had been done. "I started very quickly getting death threats," Rancic recalls. "People were sending me pictures of the barrel of a gun saying, 'I'm going to kill your family.' It was awful."
After the segment aired, Zendaya wrote a powerful letter calling out Rancic, E! and "Fashion Police." Soon after, Kelly Osbourne and Kathy Griffin resigned from the show.
Now that it has been a while since the controversy, Giuliana said she is hoping to move on.
"It was a very unfortunate incident," she says. "I'm so regretful that people interpreted the joke [as they did]. I hurt people and I feel terrible about that. And I learned a really important lesson that if people are offended, it doesn't matter the intent."
