John Lennon's Ex-wife Cynthia Lennon Dies at 75- Yoko Ono Sends Condolences
Cynthia Lennon, the first wife of former Beatles guitarist John Lennon, died of cancer Wednesday at her home in Mallorca, Spain, according to reports.
Born Cynthia Powell, in Blackpool, she met Lennon at art school in Liverpool in 1957 and the couple married just before Beatlemania took over the world. Following their divorce, John married Ono, whom he was with until the time of his death in 1980.
Meanwhile, the late John Lennon's second wife Yoko Ono, sent her condolences to the family. Ono took to her website to speak about the 75-year-old's death Wednesday, sharing a heartfelt message with fans about Cynthia's "zest for life" and issuing her condolences to Cynthia and John's son, Julian.
"I'm very saddened by Cynthia's death," Ono, 82, wrote. "She was a great person and a wonderful mother to Julian. She had such a strong zest for life and I felt proud how we two women stood first in the Beatles family. Please join me in sending love and support to Julian at this very sad time."
Cynthia Lennon's death was announced on the website and Twitter account of her son, Julian Lennon and confirmed by his representative.
Julian Lennon posted a moving video tribute to his late mother with a song he had written in her honour.
"You gave your life for me, you gave your life for love," it begins, showing footage of him as a young boy with his parents. It also shows footage of Cynthia with John during the early days of Beatlemania.
"The love you left behind will carry on," Julian, 51, sings in a style influenced by his late father.
It concludes with the words: "I know you're safe above."
John Lennon was shot and killed while attempting to enter his New York home.
