Woman Arrested after Recanting Report against Lineman Jonathan Taylor
The woman who accused Jonathan Taylor for assaulting her this past weekend has recanted her report. Officers subsequently arrested her for giving a false report, the authorities stated.
Kip Hart, the assistant commander of the Tuscaloosa County Metro Homicide Unit, revealed that the 24-year-old woman provided a written statement stating that she had lied about the whole story.
"On March both, 2015, the female contacted investigators and stated that she wanted to recant her statements about the previous domestic violence incidents and that Taylor did not harm her," the statement read. "The female was [further] interviewed on March 31st, 2015 and maintained that she had lied about the previous incidents. Based on her statements that she had fabricated the stories investigators charged the female with False Reporting to Law Enforcement."
"We're scratching the surface of what's going on," Hart said according to ESPN.com,
The fabricated report read, "She and Taylor had been in a verbal dispute that turned physical [and he had] caused injuries to her neck and damaged property in her apartment."
Lineman Taylor, 21, was removed from the Alabama football program a day after his arrest. Taylor was previously kicked off of the football program in Georgia for domestic violence charges, which are currently still pending.
"Jonathan Taylor has been dismissed from the team and is no longer a part of our program," coach Nick Saban said in a statement released through the athletic department. "This will still need to go through the legal process, but when he was given an opportunity here, it was under strict guidelines and we made it clear there was a zero tolerance policy."
Taylor was dismissed after his arrest. Initially there appeared to be a real case due to the "visible marks" present on the woman as well as the "damage that was observed" at the scene. However, now that the woman has recanted her story, the charges against Taylor will be reviewed. The charges include domestic violence third-degree assault and domestic violence third-degree criminal mischief.
Hart said that the investigation is not over and added, "There was reason to believe he did something to her."
It is unclear whether or not Taylor will be able to rejoin the football program.
