Zayn Malik has opened up about quitting One Direction.

The 22-year-old singer broke so many teenagers' hearts when he announced that he would be leaving the British boy band. Now, these girls and boys know why.

In an interview with The Sun, which will appear in the Friday's publication, Malik talked about his decision to leave the highly successful and popular group.

"I did try to do something that I wasn't happy doing for a while, for the sake of maybe other people's happiness-and that was mainly the fans. And I only ever tried to do it for the fans, and it was only ever for them," Malik explained. "And, basically, I'm only upset I feel like I may have let them down in some sort of way. That's the main thing that I don't want to happen," he said. "It's not that I've turned my back on them or anything, it's just that I just can't do that anymore because it's not real to me."

Malik also made it clear that he did not quit due to any issues with the other guys, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Harry Styles.

"When I was there as well, we were all...there were no contingencies, do you know what I mean? It was always just everyone kind of doing what we were doing and that's why it's been really good for me, because I feel it's been a bit different to what other bands have broke up by, or when a member's left or whatever," Malik said. "My band has been really supportive. They've been really cool about it. And they understand that, you know, it's not real to me anymore. They still want to do it for a while, so they're going to carry on doing what they want to do. And I think they're doing to do OK for a while. I think they're going to be cool."

Despite how hectic these past few days have been for Malik, his band members and of course, the fans, Malik said that he believed he was doing the right thing.

"[I've] never felt more in control in my life. And I feel like I'm doing what's right, and right by myself and right by the boys, so I feel good," he said.

Although Malik is quitting One Direction, he is surely not leaving the music world. The young singer hinted to a possibility of starting a solo career when he said that he would be focused on writing. When asked if he would consider going back to the band, Malik gave a vague answer and said that he honestly does not know

One Direction, in the meantime, will continue as a quartet. The band reportedly is not looking for a fifth member to take Malik's Spot.

Fans have started #LetsBuyOneDirection, which was a worldwide trend on Thursday, the day after Malik announced his departure from the band.
