A report released by the Justice Department's watchdog on Thursday alleged that many agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration participated in 'sex parties' that were organized by local drug cartels.

These parties with prostitutes is said to have occurred overseas for a number of years but the report did not specify the name of country. However a law official familiar with the case identified the country to be Columbia.

In a 131 page report filed by the Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz, it said, "Although some of the DEA agents participating in these parties denied it, the information in the case file suggested they should have known the prostitutes in attendance were paid with cartel funds."

At least 7 of the 10 agents accused of participating in the parties, admitted to attending the gatherings, most of which happened in houses leased by the US government. The officers received suspensions ranging from 2 to 10 days.

"The Department of Justice takes the issues raised in the Inspector General report seriously and . . . is taking steps to implement policies and procedures to help prevent them from happening in the future," said Justice Department spokesman Patrick Rodenbush.

He added: "The Department is already working with the law enforcement components to ensure a zero-tolerance policy on sexual harassment and misconduct is enforced and that incidents are properly reported. The department is also committed to ensuring the proper preservation and disclosure of electronic communications, including text messages and images."

According to the report, in between 2009 and 2012 there have been 26 allegations of DEA agents soliciting prostitutes while being abroad.
