Facebook In Talks With News Websites, To Host Their Content Natively
Facebook seems to be on an expansion sprint. The social networking giant is reportedly in talks with media giants to host their coverage within Facebook.com.
More than a billion monthly users and quarterly revenue beyond expectation give Facebook the considerable leverage.
NYT reported that the company has already struck some deals. Citing two people with knowledge of the discussions, the news site reported: "The initial partners are expected to be The New York Times, BuzzFeed and National Geographic, although others may be added since discussions are continuing. The Times and Facebook are moving closer to a firm deal, one person said."
The NYT also stated that in order "to make the proposal more appealing to publishers, Facebook has discussed ways for publishers to make money from advertising that would run alongside the content".
According to the report, The Huffington Post and the business and economics website Quartz were also approached.
It's only recently that Facebook has started experimenting with the revenue-sharing options. In December last year, the company began showing N.F.L. clips sponsored by Verizon. Verizon paid for the clips to be sent to people's news feeds and ran an ad at the end of them. The N.F.L. and Facebook split the revenue.
