NCAA Tournament: Sweet 16 Teams Vie for the National Title

The Sweet 16 teams are set for the second week of the NCAA tournament.

In the first week of competition, the major upsets included number one seed Villanova, who got kicked out by N.C. State and number three seeds Baylor and Iowa State, who were upset by Georgia State and UAB, respectively.

In this upcoming round of play, Yahoo! Sports reported that only 56 percent of the seeded teams that were predicted to make it to this round did so. Despite this, the round of 16 is still very much packed with big name colleges and programs with no real Cinderella story this year.

ESPN.com reported, "Five of the seven clear national title contenders -- Kentucky, Wisconsin, Duke, Arizona, and Gonzaga -- are here. (All apologies to Villanova and Virginia, who left the East region with a top-two this weekend.) So is a healthy cadre of next-tier squads that spent most of the season hovering around the top-15: Utah, Wichita State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, North Carolina. As for the rest, no team in the Sweet 16 ranks lower than 32nd in adjusted efficiency. Twelve rank in the top 20. Eight rank in the top 10. There are no total outliers here."

Here is a look into the teams left in each region:

1. Midwest

In the Midwest region of the bracket, top seed UK will take on no. 5 West Virginia while no. 3. Notre Dame will take on no. 7 Wichita State.

The main focus here will be centered on Kentucky (UK) and whether or not they will get their perfect season. After a 65-51 victory over the Cincinnati Bearcats, the Kentucky Wildcats are now 36-0, which is the best start to a season for any team. Kentucky's biggest competition will be the remaining two number one seeds Duke and Wisconsin, and Arizona.

2. East

No. 8 N.C. State, off of a 71-68 win over top seed Villanova, will take on no. 4 Louisville. On the other end of the side of this region, no. 3 Oklahoma will play no. 7

Michigan State.

With the top contenders out for the East region, any of these four teams will have a shot at making the final four.

This will be the fourth Sweet 16 for Louisville and Michigan State.

3. West

The West is arguably the best region left in the tournament. No .1. Wisconsin will play no. 4 North Carolina while no. 2 Arizona will play no. 6 Xavier.

A showdown between Wisconsin and Arizona would be one heck of a game to watch. The teams met in last year's NCAA tournament right before the final four. In a thrilling match, no. 2 Wisconsin beat no.1 Arizona by just one point in overtime.

Despite how well Arizona has been playing this year, Wisconsin's veteran lineup will be tough to beat. However, before this game can happen, Wisconsin will have to beat UNC, which will arguably be the best matchups to watch during this round of play.

4. South

No. 1 Duke will take on no. 5 Utah and the underdog of the tournament, no. 11 UCLA will play no. 2 Gonzaga.

The big story here surrounds the only double-digit seeded team left in the tournament, UCLA. Throughout the tournament, UCLA has gotten many good breaks that have led them to the Sweet 16. The game between UCLA and Gonzaga will be a rematch. The teams met back in Dec. 13 with Gonzaga coming out on top.
