Floyd Mayweather Jr, Manny Pacquiao Fight: Doping Penalty will be High
An anti-doping official announced that if any drug tests come back positive for a banned substance between the Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, the penalty will be a lot more severe.
"If there's a positive test prior to the fight, the penalty for the fighter who violates it is going to be a lot higher than $5 million," Travis Tygart, the chief executive of the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) said Friday after Pacquiao's adviser suggested that a positive drug test should result in a $5 million fine.
Tygart stated that since the May 2nd fight is estimated to make $200 million, a positive drug test could result in a multi-year ban from competition. He added that the test results would be sent to the Nevada Athletic Commission. The commission and the USADA will penalize the fighters.
"They signed on to the sanctioning process that is clearly spelled out," Tygart said. "It's a contract that would be enforceable against them."
The fighters signed a deal with the USADA. Mayweather will make $120 million and Pacquiao will make $80 million. The Mayweather camp has insisted that both fighters have to submit drug and urine tests.
