Apple's iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus set a new record with more than 10 million units sold in its first weekend on the market.

Apple, the renowned smartphone making company, is known to crush its rivals with opening weekend sales of new flagships. With iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, Apple's two new flagship smartphones, the Cupertino tech giant broke its previous record by selling more than 10 million units in the opening weekend sales. Apple announced the new milestone in an official press release, Monday, where it revealed the lack of supplies deterred the sales from going much further.

Apple launched the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus earlier this month and the overwhelming response from the fans around the world outstripped the supplies. The two new phones enjoyed a favorable response when they were first made available through pre-orders Sept. 12. The company sold a record of 4 million units on the first day through pre-orders, which drained the stocks and delayed shipments. Now, the opening weekend sales of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus is just as impressive.

"Sales for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus exceeded our expectations for the launch weekend, and we couldn't be happier," Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a press statement, Monday. "We would like to thank all of our customers for making this our best launch ever, shattering all previous sell-through records by a large margin. While our team managed the manufacturing ramp better than ever before, we could have sold many more iPhones with greater supply and we are working hard to fill orders as quickly as possible."

The new-generation iPhones surpass the record sales set by last year's iPhone 5S and 5C. The company sold 9 million units of last year's flagships through opening weekend sales. Unlike last year, the new flagships did not make it to the Chinese consumer market due to regulatory issues. China is the most important market for phablets and 20 percent of all smartphones sold in 2013 were big screen smartphones, IDC research said, CSI Monitor reports. Analysts expected the sales of the devices to reach 6.5 million. But Apple has clearly surprised everybody with its impressive demand.

The combined sales of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus is only from 10 initial launch markets, including US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the UK. The tech giant has promised to launch the devices in 20 more countries this Friday and a total of 115 markets by the end of this year. China is likely to be included in its third sale batch as a recent report indicated Apple has won two of three licenses in the country that are essential for launch.
