YouTube might be launching a monthly subscription video service for its best original content very soon, according to reports.

"On a separate track, YouTube is exploring the prospect of launching its own subscription VOD service, modeled on YouTube Music Key. Launched last fall in a closed beta test, Music Key provides unlimited, ad-free access to musicvideos and some 30 million songs on Google Play Music, for a six-month introductory price of $7.99 per month," noted Variety in a report.

The Verge noted that the service would presumably offer ad-free streaming of certain video content that's part of the program which could include videos from YouTube stars under the YouTube Originals banner.

Earlier, Google-owned video site has offered YouTube Music Key that lets users access select music videos ad-free and free streaming from Google Play Music at $7.99 per month.

YouTube's move into a subscription model can be seen as a response to pressure from rivals like Vimeo, Hulu, Vessel, and others.
