Chip Kelly Makes More Questionable Moves; All for a Bigger Plan?
Chip Kelly does not care if no one understands the moves he has made so far over these past few weeks.
In his most recent trade, Kelly gave up quarterback Nick Foles as well as two high draft picks over the next two years to the St. Louis Rams in exchange for Sam Bradford and one fifth-round pick in 2015.
Although Foles has been riddled with injuries last season, he proved in 2013 that he can deliver under Kelly's offense. Foles went 203-for-317 for 2,891 yards and recorded 13 touchdowns with just two interceptions. Bradford, the former number one pick, however, only started seven games over the last two years and have suffered from two ACL injuries.
Since this trade appears to be quite uneven, many analysts are speculating that Kelly is making these moves to better his chances of landing quarterback prospect, Marcus Mariota. However, this move in particular, does not really improve the Eagles' shot at landing Mariota. Well, at least not right now.
Dan Wetzel with Yahoo! Sports wrote: "No one outside the Eagles' small executive circle knows exactly what Kelly's blueprint says but the guess is the deal increases the possibility of Philly moving farther up to select Kelly's old Oregon quarterback, Marcus Mariota. So this isn't likely to be Philly's last big deal."
Jarrett Bell with USA TODAY Sports added, "The other key question is whether Bradford will emerge as a long-term answer ... or the guy keeping the seat warm for the next proposition, who just might be a particular Heisman Trophy winner from Oregon.... And who knows: Maybe Kelly's not done yet. There is no shortage of speculation that the quarterback he really wants is the one who played for him at Oregon: Marcus Mariota."
If the Eagles plan on using Bradford as their starting quarterback, Kelly might have to change his playbook to increase the protection around his quarterback. Other than the durability factor, Bradford's playing style fits well with Kelly's up-tempo system. Bradford has also worked with offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, who used to coach him with the Rams. He just needs to stay healthy.
Just last week, Kelly shocked the league when he traded the Eagles star running back LeSean McCoy to the Buffalo Bills in exchange for linebacker Kiko Alonso, who played for Oregon.
"I thought at least if he was going trade me ... just let me know, I mean, as a man," McCoy had said before acknowledging that Kelly most likely has a bigger plan in place. "He's a smart guy. Whatever he's doing he's trying to make it right, he's trying to make it work."
We will have to wait until next season to see whether or not Kelly's master plan was worth all of these seemingly absurd trades.
