NY Jets Owner Woody Johnson Pushing to Get Darrelle Revis Back
New York Jets owner Woody Johnson is reportedly pushing to get Darrelle Revis back. The 29-year-old just won Super Bowl XLIX with the New England Patriots.
The New York Daily News is reporting that Johnson "has been involved in serious internal discussions with Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan to make a push for perennial All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis if/when he becomes a free agent next week."
Adam Schefter with ESPN.com reported on Monday that Revis is set on hitting the free agent market. The Patriots are also not expected to exercise the cornerback's $20 million option bonus, which comes with a huge $25 million cap.
Schefter stated on ESPN Radio, "This all comes down to whatever Darrelle Revis wants to do. He's got a Super Bowl ring, his career has been validated, he's got one more big score left - big score in terms of big contracts. So does he want to take that big contract with a team like the New York Jets, who are dying to make a run at Darrelle Revis? Or the Buffalo Bills [with former head coach Rex Ryan]? Or is he willing to take less to go back and play with Tom Brady and Bill Belichick and be in the environment he's been in in New England? And that's a call that only he can make."
Revis was selected by the Jets as the 14th overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft. He spent six seasons with the Jets before getting traded in 2013 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
It has been roughly one month since the Patriots filed tampering charges against Johnson for commenting about Revis during a news conference. Johnson stated that he would "love for Darelle to come back." According to NFL policy, "Any public or private statement of interest, qualified or unqualified, in another club's player to that player's agent or representative, or to a member of the news media, is a violation of the Anti-Tampering Policy."
Johnson later clarified his comment, stating that he "misspoke." He added that he called Patriots owner Robert Kraft to assure him that he was not trying to tamper with the player's contract.
The Patriots are expected to offer Revis a multi-year contract. However, they are not known for being the highest bidder. If the Jets can put a better deal on the table, Revis might just be headed back to New York.
Revis played in all 16 regular-season games. He recorded 47 combined tackles, one forced fumble, a fumble recovery and two interceptions. During the postseason, he totaled three tackles, one sack and an interception.
