‘The Walking Dead' Season 5, Episode 12 Review: Rick Gets a Makeover
The sound of children gives our group hope once they reach Alexandria, a self-sustaining community where its inhabitants appear relatively less crazy and dangerous than Woodbury and Terminus.
As our group starts to settle in, by giving up their weapons and taking on jobs within Alexandria, we gain a little bit of hope that this community can become their home for the time being. After all, the community seems to have everything from running water to electricity. However, not everything is always what it seems, which is something this show has proven to us over and over again.
Despite settling in and making new friends, the episode follows members of the group and their reservations about this community.
Here are five things that happened in episode 12, "Remember."
1. Deanna Monroe seems understanding
Deanna Monroe, the woman in charge of Alexandria, seems to be an understanding and reasonable leader, unlike the past, power hungry - or human-hungry - leaders our group has encountered. She videotapes her interviews with our group as she tries to find jobs within the community that suit their strengths. Throughout the episode, she works with Rick, Michonne and other members of the group and makes sure they feel equal.
So far, all we know is that she used to be a congresswoman for Ohio and arrived to Alexandria with her family under the orders of the army.
Her son, Aiden, on the other hand, will probably be a problem for our group. During his run with Glenn, Tara and Noah, Aiden chooses to attempt to tie a walker up instead of killing it on the spot because that walker had killed members of his previous group. After almost getting Tara bitten by the walker, Glenn kills the walker despite Aiden's command. Aiden and Glenn duke it out inside the gates and the fight gets broken up by Monroe, who later thanks Glenn for punching her son.
Aiden's cockiness and inability to process risk could be dangerous if our group goes on more runs with him.
2. Rick gets a makeover
Rick's makeover stops almost everyone in his or her tracks. After shaving and getting a haircut from his new neighbor, Jesse, Rick's clean and refreshed face represents a new start at a new place. When Michonne sees Rick's shaven face for the very first time ever, she smiles and says that she has a good feeling about this place.
3. Carol paints a new picture
Throughout the seasons, we have watched Carol grow into a strong survivor. In this episode, her survival instincts lead her to play a different character. During her interview, Carol pretends to be an innocent, homemaker who many would not consider as a threat. Her fears about the group, however, are voiced when she talks to Rick. She tells Rick that a place like this could make them weak, a concern that Carl voiced earlier in the episode. Rick reassures her that getting weak is no longer in their blood and if anything happens, they will just take over the place.
4. Rick and Michonne are the new law
Not only does Monroe seem to like Rick and Michonne a lot, she makes them the new law in town. After Rick learns that he will become a constable and puts on the uniform, it becomes clear that the group will stay.
5. Darryl continues to resist
It should be of no surprise that Darryl will be the most resistant to change. Throughout this episode, as the other members of our group take showers and clean up, Darryl remains in the same clothes. It would be interesting to see how Darryl will fit in with the new community.
"The Walking Dead" airs on Sunday at 9 p.m. on AMC.
