Philadelphia 76ers Waive JaVale McGee
The Philadelphia 76ers have waived center JaVale McGee, league sources reported according to ESPN.com. McGee, 27, will be able to play in the playoffs with another team this season since the 76ers waived him before the midnight deadline.
McGee will enter free agency once his waivers clear this week. When McGee was traded to the 76ers, he stated that he did not want a buyout. However, on Sunday, McGee's representatives were reportedly on the hunt for a team that might be interested in acquiring a center.
"I don't want to get bought out," McGee had said to local reporters shortly after the trade. "That's not a positive thing. When you think about it, you don't get all of your money when you get bought out. So it doesn't make sense why someone would want to get bought out unless they are older -- older and they want to go to a contender or something. I'm not that old. I just want to play basketball."
When McGee was traded from the Denver Nuggets on the NBA deadline day, the Sixers took on all of the remaining money on his contract as well as a future first-round pick. According to USA TODAY Sports, McGee managed to keep the $11.25 million remaining in his salary this season. He also did not have to surrender his next season's payment of $12 million.
The 7-footer played in six games with the Sixers. He averaged 3.0 points and 2.2 rebounds. In this season, he is averaging 4.6 points with 2.7 rebounds in 11.1 minutes over 23 games.
The Sixers (13-46) have the second worst record in the Eastern Conference after the New York Knicks. The Sixers will play the Toronto Raptors Monday at 7:00 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.
