When most people think of college, they think of a time of new experiences and personal growth. College can be an exciting time where you get to learn new things, meet new people, and step out of your comfort zone. However, it can also be a challenging time where you have to figure out what you want to do with your life, manage your own finances, and make your own decisions. It's important to remember that everyone is different and while some people love the independence that comes with being away from home, others feel lost and lonely. It's important to take time to adjust to your new life as a student. Here are some tips to help you feel more confident and comfortable in your new surroundings.

Get Involved

There are so many activities to get involved in on campus. You can join a club or fraternity, go to sporting events, or participate in events. Joining a club is a great way to meet new people who share your interests. Fraternities and sororities offer social activities and networking opportunities. Attending sporting events is a great way to get connected with students from outside your class. Make an effort to get involved and you will get so much more from your experience.

Know Where You Stand Financially

This is most likely your first time fending for yourself financially. Before you even start college, look into Going Merry scholarships and the criteria that's needed. Know where to look to apply and read the application instructions carefully. When you secure funding, work with the amount that you have and try to stay within budget at all times. Be careful with your expenses and always reach out to family or friends if you need advice or some financial help. Don't suffer in silence when it comes to money worries.

Take Care of Yourself

It's important to take care of yourself when in college. You're likely juggling classes, work, and social obligations, so it's important to slot in time for self-care. Take time to unwind each evening after class. Run a bath, read a book, or go for a walk in nature. The habit of getting outdoors is good for your health so when you can, prioritize the outdoors. But as a general rule, do whatever it is that makes you feel relaxed and at ease. Make sure your diet is on point and try not to binge on highly processed foods and takeaways. Stick with fresh fruit and veg where possible and you'll find that you're more focused throughout the day. Doing at least 30 minutes of exercise each day and getting at least eight hours of sleep each night is also crucial.

Make Connections

The connections you make in college will last a lifetime so give them the time they need to flourish. The key is to get out there and be social. Join online forums, chat to your professors, and attend any networking events that interest you. Don't be shy when it comes to introducing yourself as your new best friend or future employer might just be sitting beside you in the canteen or standing beside you in the coffee line.
