They say that it's a candidate's market but it may not feel that way for a number of people who are struggling to find a job in sales.

Competition can be fierce, especially when there are other candidates out there who seem to know how to effectively sell themselves to recruiters. Sales recruitment agencies can weed out unsuitable candidates fairly easily, and it takes some work to know what they are looking out for when they are scoping out job boards and social media sites like LinkedIn.

Here are 3 tips you can use to make yourself more desirable to recruiters.

1. Make Your Profile More Attractive

There are over 467 million people who use LinkedIn for its ability to easily find and share professional profiles. This means that a number of recruiters will use LinkedIn when it comes to seeking out sales candidates. If you want to get noticed among the millions, make sure that your profile has these key qualities:

  • Use keywords related to sales throughout your profile, even in your headline and summary

  • Create a unique summary that's conversational and more like a personal introduction

  • Fill your page with industry-focused news and activities, for example:

    • Like and share posts from the community

    • Add photos and videos from sales events you've been to

    • Create status updates related to your time working in the industry

  • Ideally, you should be posting sales-related content at least 2 to 5 times a week

    • Try to time it for early in the day and late in the afternoon

  • Join a local community and network within

And most importantly, make sure that you follow and connect with people who work in or are connected to the industry. Oftentimes recruiters will find your name based on related searches.

2. Expand Beyond LinkedIn

Don't just limit yourself to using LinkedIn to get yourself noticed. Recruiters will often check job boards like Indeed or Monster to find potential candidates. The resume that you upload onto a job board should contain keywords and phrases that sales recruiters would look for using a Boolean or string search. Try to use them when you can, but not excessively or else it will sound unnatural and forced, which a recruiter will notice right away.

3. Attend Networking Events

It never fails - networking is one of the most effective ways to get your name out there and noticed by recruiters. Even though technology has made it easier to hire, people still value face-to-face interaction, and the event of a sale can be your perfect opportunity to shine. Make sure to bring an ample amount of business cards and copies of your resume, but don't push these items too hard. The main focus should be to make connections first and foremost - if they ask for a copy of your resume, that's just a great bonus.

Keep Actively Searching

Your dedication to the search is sure to be noticed by someone eventually. Just keep at it, and you'll be sure to catch the eye of a sales recruiter one day.
