There were multiple reports in the past stating that there are increased chances of various cancers for obese people. Now it is confirmed that at least 11 type of cancers would have a higher penetration rate in obese people. The list includes kidney, breast, ovary, pancreas, bone marrow, esophageal, biliary tract colon, and rectum according to the study led by Dr. Maria Kyrgiou from Imperial College London.

"Obesity is expected to have relation with other types of cancers as well, but the studies are yet to prove a connection," said Dr. Maria. According to the latest report of World Health Organization, there are 1.9 billion adults globally who are overweight. Additionally, out of every ten people, four are found overweight or obese, which is also raising other risks as well, including heart disease, kidney problems, diabetes, body disorders, other ailments among others. The research team referenced as many as 204 studies conducted earlier and tried to find a relation with the overweight to 36 different cancers and spotted at least 11.

Interestingly, the research also looked to see any exaggerated reports to make things more accurate. The research has confirmed that biliary tract has at least 56 percent higher risk for every five unit increase in body mass index. It should be noted that five units increase in body mass index is enough to mark a person with a healthy 20 BMI to overweight 25 BMI and from there to obese 30 BMI. But, in the case of colorectal cancer, there is no sharp increase in the risk is noted. For every five unit increase in BMI, colorectal cancer saw an increase of 9 percent.

Also, the risk of postmenopausal breast cancer has shown an increase by 11 percent for every 5kg weight gain in women, who did not use any hormone replacement therapy. The hip to waist ratio increase of 0.1 percent adds another 21 percent more risk of womb cancer. The study reveals the importance of staying at healthy BMI that is between 18.5 and 24.9. It should be noted that 25 to 29.9 BMI is considered as overweight and 30 or above BMI is obese.
