Most packaged foods in the United States (US) will now appear wrapped in all new food labels. The new labels will detail out new, easier-to-use nutritional facts on the product packaging.

The new labels will start to appear on the packaged food items by July 2018. While it is still not clear whether the new nutritional labels would add any value to the existing concerns of the consumer, the US Food and Drug Administrations (FDA) believe that the new consumer-friendly labels would enable people to make more informed decisions around what they choose to consume.

The FDA clearly does not want people to overlook key nutritional facts about the kind of items they consume in a day. The decision to change the nutritional labels has come amidst a striking increase in the number people who suffer from obesity and diabetes in the country.

To bring nutritional information in the notice of the consumers, the agency has decided to increase the font size of the key information and also make important things bold in the printing, especially the calories per serving and the food's portion size. For example, people are now expected to control what they eat when they realize that they are about to consume the fourth portion with the eighth cookie in the packet.

The new label will also include information on added sugars. This will enable the consumers to differentiate between the natural sugars contained in the product and the additional sugar that had been added to the product.

For example, people consider yogurt as a healthy food item. But in reality, they do not know the amount of added sugars contained in the product. The new label will specify the amount of sugar that comes naturally from lactose and the amount of artificial sugar added on top of it.
