Chicago Cubs Opening Day: Bathroom Shortage Leaves Fans Angry

Fans flocked to Wrigley Field to watch the Chicago Cubs' opening day game against the St. Louis Cardinals. But instead of being able to enjoy the game, fans were forced to wait on extremely long restroom lines due to construction.

"Downstairs was already [crowded], so upstairs, being out further, complicated the issue and led to longer wait times," the team's spokesman, Julian Green, said. "With 35,000 fans showing up in the ballpark tonight, we were simply not prepared to handle guests during peak periods. We have high standards for service, and we missed the mark. We want to apologize to our fans for the inconvenience tonight."

Due to the construction, the bathrooms located in the two upper-deck areas were out of service on Sunday, leading to massive lines for the bathrooms in the lower-deck areas.

Angry fans immediately complained on social media. Some of them claimed that they ended up missing two innings of the game, while others complained about the lack of food available at certain concession stands.

Deadspin published several email accounts of fans who attended the game. Some of these accounts read:

"Yes, fans were peeing in cups tonight. They were peeing EVERYWHERE. I heard there were only two working bathrooms- I know the lines were horrific and I also know that some were shut down early on because toilets just wouldn't flush. Saw three fights break out before the fifth (wouldn't expect much better from Wrigley). Guy in front of us went to get snacks around the sixth and came back saying they were out of everything but french fries in the concessions. Maybe they forgot the game was tonight?" - Libby

"I was at the game last night and can verify that peeing in cups/corners was happening all over the concourse. I waited almost an hour when I tried after the 2nd inning. It was ridiculous. I saw 2 guys who ended up pissing their pants. I was shocked. I dont know what the bare minimum standard is but it wasnt available last night. Bars and restaurants are held to it by the health department. I'm not sure why the Cubs weren't." - Jason

"Saw a guy pee against the wall while in the outrageous line for the bathroom...." - Tad.

Fans did not miss much, however, in the Cub's 3-0 loss. Ace Jon Lester was yanked out in the fifth inning. The Cubs were not able to score in 13-at bats with runners in scoring position and the top six batters in the lineup went 3-for-23.

There will be construction at Wrigley Field for the next five years. In order to prevent future problems, the Cubs stated that they will monitor bathroom wait lines throughout the season and bring in portable units.
