Sherlock Season 4 Air Date and Premiere: Victoria Era Christmas Special Will Air in December Before New Season

The one-off BBC's Sherlock Christmas special will be set in Victorian era, the show's co-creator Steven Moffat has confirmed.

Moffat made the confirmation during an interview at South by Soutwest conference this week. His confirmation validates fans' speculation after lead actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman were spotted in 19th century attire. The actors were filming the 90 minute special, which is not connected to season 4. The special is set to air in December. Season 4 will play out in three episodes most likely in 2016.

"The special is its own thing. We wouldn't have done the story we're doing, and the way we're doing it, if we didn't have this special. It's not part of the run of three episodes. So we had this to do it - as we could hardly conceal - it's Victorian. [Co-creator Mark Gatiss] and me, we wanted to do this, but it had to be a special, it had to be separate entity on its own. It's kind of in its own little bubble," Moffat said told Entertainment Weekly.

Design & Trend picked up season 4 rumors which suggest that James Moriarty storyline could conclude with the death of the devious schemer. Charles Augustus Magnussen's death is also slated for next season. Watson's wife could meet her end too, after delivering a child.
